History of South King County Food Coalition

The coalition currently seeks to strengthen the efforts of its member agencies by enhancing the local food security network through increased engagement with:

  • faith based organizations
  • non-profits, social service providers
  • local businesses
  • service organizations
  • individual volunteers in the fight against hunger and poverty

For the 2010-2011 cycle the coalition acquired a Harvest Against Hunger AmeriCorps VISTA to increase its capacity for this kind of outreach, network building and volunteer engagement. The VISTA’s projects included:

  • “Yes, we CAN!” canning initiative
  • Sonju Park community fruit orchard and garden
  • GIS mapping with the University of Washington
  • digital storytelling
  • grant research and assistance

These efforts helped the coalition to increase its visibility in the community while increasing the amount of healthful produce distributed by the eleven food bank coalition.
