In the summer of 2008, the Food Access Coalition of Kittitas County (consisting of Heifer
International, FISH Food Bank, Hope Source, WSU Extension and Master Gardeners) made it a
priority and goal to implement a gleaning project to augment existing programs that help provide
better nutrition and relieve hunger in the county.
Current Activities
Based on the agricultural realities of Kittitas County, the Harvest VISTA Gleaning Coordinator
together with the direction of his host site, FISH Food Bank, decided to focus their efforts on
developing partnerships with the following:
-
Three large scale vegetable farms
-
Orchards (commercial and residential)
-
Community Gardens
Almost all gleans from vegetable farms were cull pick-ups, but all produce gleaned from
orchards was harvested by teams of volunteers.
